Central station - Modern platform in Hanover: 75-ton structure installed
The German Railway is pushing forward with the modernization of Hannover Hauptbahnhof. Two cranes placed a 75 tonne heavy steel trough in one piece at platform B with tracks 3 and 4 during the night leading to Monday, according to the railway. The 60 tonne predecessor construction from 1914 was cut and transported away.
The entire platform is scheduled to be renovated during the summer - including the supporting structures that hold the platform and tracks. In addition, signaling and safety technology as well as overhead power lines are to be renewed. The railway has been renovating the Hauptbahnhof since 2022, with the work expected to be completed by 2032.
There are still obstacles for the Germany Takt
It was previously known that the German Railway plans to expand Hannover Hauptbahnhof as one of the key nodes in its entire railway network with approximately two billion Euros. Plans include two additional tracks, an additional platform, and a digital signaling system. The Germany Takt, which aims to connect metropolitan areas with half-hourly intercity trains, is also part of the plans.
However, there are still obstacles for the Germany Takt: For years, the question of track expansion or new construction between Hannover and Hamburg has caused controversy. The same applies to the planned high-speed track section of the Hannover-Bielefeld route on the important East-West connection from Berlin via Wolfsburg, Hannover, and Bielefeld to the Ruhr Area and Rhineland.
The tracks 3 and 4 are scheduled to be alternately closed for maintenance until September 9th, the railway announced. One side of the platform will always be available for passengers and train traffic. The platform dome is scheduled to be renewed in summer 2025. The renovation of platform A with tracks 1 and 2 is also expected to last until 2025. The background: During the construction work, it was discovered that three additional bridge repairs for the platform and tracks were necessary.
- The expansion plans for Hannover Hauptbahnhof, led by German Railways, include constructing two additional tracks and an extra platform, as part of their efforts to become a key node in the entire railway network with an estimated two billion Euros.
- In Lower Saxony, the modernization of Hannover Hauptbahnhof's platform B involves the replacement of a 60-tonne predecessor construction from 1914 with a 75-tonne heavy steel trough, showing the railway's dedication to upgrading its central station infrastructure.
- As part of the ongoing construction in Hannover Hauptbahnhof, the German Railways are also focusing on the improvement of traffic flow, with renewals of signaling and safety technology, overhead power lines, and a digital signaling system within the project timeline.
- The German Takt, a plan to connect metropolitan areas with half-hourly intercity trains, is part of Hannover Hauptbahnhof's expansion plans, aiming to ensure seamless traffic in Hanover and its surrounding areas, but faces challenges with track expansion and new constructions, especially in the Hannover-Bielefeld route.
