Modern heating in one in four Hessian households

Modern heating systems are being used more and more frequently in Hessian households. The proportion of heating systems less than five years old has risen by 10 percentage points to 25 percent within four years, as the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) announced in Berlin on Friday. In detached and semi-detached houses, the proportion this year is 27.1 percent, while only 15.3 percent of apartments in multi-family houses use modern heating technology. The results are part of the "How does Hessen heat?" study.

The average age of heating systems in Hesse has also fallen significantly: in 2023 it was 13.6 years, compared to 18.9 years in 2019. However, there has been little change in the proportion of heating systems over 20 years old, which are used to heat rooms in around one in three households.

The proportion of gas and oil heating systems fell by around two percentage points each. This year, 7.4% of households have an electric heat pump, which is almost three percentage points more than in 2019.

The most common additional heating source is still a fireplace, although its share fell from 44.1% to 31.1%. Electric radiators such as fan heaters became much more popular, with their share almost tripling to 24%. Solar thermal energy also became much more popular, with an increase of 14 percentage points to 16.2%.

Consumers in Hesse are increasingly turning to modern energy-efficient heating systems to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to climate change mitigation. These new systems are not only more environmentally friendly but also lead to improved living conditions, as evidenced by the increased popularity of electric heat pumps and solar thermal energy.

The widespread adoption of modern heating technologies in Hessian households signals a shift towards more energy-conscious living, which is essential for a sustainable future. As consumers become more aware of their energy consumption, they are making more responsible choices that will benefit both their living spaces and the environment.
