Workforce situation - Moderate relaxation in the job market: minimal progress

The joblessness rate in Saxony-Anhalt has gone down even more in May, dropping to 7.5%, based on the Regional Office of the Federal Employment Agency. Markus Behrens, Director of the Management Board at the Regional Office in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, revealed on Tuesday that the economic atmosphere remains reserved. In May of the given year, over 1,400 fewer individuals were recorded as jobless in comparison to April. In total, there were 82,600 workless people reported by the Job Centers. A year prior, the joblessness rate was stated to be 7.4%.

Mr. Behrens noted, even though there are economic issues and various challenges, it's encouraging that businesses are still recruiting special-skills workers. Nearly 5,000 people from Saxony-Anhalt finished their unemployment in May and found a new career. Specifically, there was a significant need for specialists.

The data from the Employment Agency shows that the labor market is separated, as explained by Behrens. While the overall joblessness rate is 7.5%, the rate for experts is notably reduced - it's 5%. The joblessness rate for unskilled workers, on the other hand, is much higher at 35%. "The huge need for well-trained experts mirrors the change and modernization within the economy, resulting in more expectations from employees," said Behrens. Organizations are up against various difficulties such as digitalization, automation, green transition, and demographic change.

There's been an increase in long-term workless and people with Ukrainian heritage among the unemployed. According to the Employment Agency, almost 39% of the unemployed in Saxony-Anhalt are long-term unemployed - translating to 32,200 women and men without work for over a year. Comparing this to previous years, this number has increased by nearly 2,100 people. The number of individuals with Ukrainian origins found work in Saxony-Anhalt has risen by 800 people, almost reaching 5,300.

The number of fresh jobs that were added and the number of socially insured employees almost remained the same compared to May of the previous year. In May 2024, businesses reported nearly 3,300 new jobs. It is calculated that close to 795,300 people in Saxony-Anhalt were socially insured workers. The number of vacancies in the training market is also lower compared to earlier years, with roughly 5,800 vacancies.
