Crime hotspots - Mobile video surveillance systems for NRW police presented

In future, North Rhine-Westphalia's police will be able to monitor crime hotspots throughout the state using mobile video technology. At a meeting in Duisburg on Wednesday, Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) presented newly developed mobile video systems - a total of ten car trailers, each with six cameras that can be raised up to five meters on a mast.

In addition to the existing stationary video surveillance at hotspots in some cities, the mobile technology provides operational support for the police and a better overview, said the Minister. The images can only be viewed by the police. The Police Act applies to their use.

Section 15a of this law stipulates that video surveillance is legal for the prevention of criminal offenses if repeated crimes have been committed at the location or if there are indications of conspiracies to commit crimes of significant importance. The recordings may be stored for a maximum of 14 days if they are not required for the prosecution of criminal offenses.
