The Syntainics MBC, a German basketball team playing in the Bundesliga, has unveiled their new head coach to lead the team for the 2024/25 season. Announced on Monday, Janis Gailitis will take over the reins of the Weißenfels-based team. The 39-year-old Latvian coach previously served as head coach at VEF Riga, a top team in his home country, for eight and a half years. During this time, he secured seven championships and three cup victories, including three consecutive doubles.
In addition to his duties at VEF Riga, Gailitis has been assisting the Latvian national team since 2021. Under his direction, the national team finished fifth at the 2023 World Cup. He will continue in his position with the national team, with the upcoming Olympics in Paris as the next target. The Latvians will take part in a qualifying tournament in July with hopes of earning a spot in the games. If successful, they'll challenge German champions in the preliminary round on the 30th of July.
Martin Geissler, the managing director of the MBC, expressed his excitement over the new acquisition. "We're thrilled to welcome a very charismatic, enthusiastic, successful, and experienced coach who is still in his thirties. Janis is one of the top coaching talents in the Baltic region."
