National group - Missing from European Championship training camp is Neuer due to a stomach illness.
German national team coach, Julian Nagelsmann, is forced to exclude Manuel Neuer from the start of their European Championship preparations. Neuer's place as the country's top goalkeeper remains secure for now, according to Nagelsmann during their opening press conference in Blankenhain. He shared, "If he's healthy then yes."
Neuer, 38, is waylaid by a stomach-intestinal infection in Thuringia. Nagelsmann doesn't anticipate him returning earlier than Wednesday; he visited the doctor that day to assess his condition. The coach said, "He's a bit tired and it's about him being fit enough for meaningful training."
A trip by the Muenchen player wouldn't make sense, as he could potentially spread the infection to other players. According to Nagelsmann, the illness is "nothing dramatic."
Since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Neuer hasn't donned the national team's jersey. A complex leg fracture sustained immediately after the tournament thwarted his plans. In March, his much-awaited return was scuppered by a muscle injury. Prior to this, Nagelsmann declared him his number one for the European Championship.
If he recovers, Neuer could appear in their June 3rd test match against Ukraine in Nuremberg. His latest performances in the Bayern jersey have raised concerns, evident in their losses to Real Madrid (1:2) and TSG Hoffenheim (2:4).
