Blankenhain - The Highlights - Missing European Championship start for Neuer: Goalkeeper faces infection delay
The German national soccer team's preparations for the European Championship are set to begin without their goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. As per the DFB, Neuer, who was set to start as the number 1 for the team by national coach Julian Nagelsmann, couldn't make it to the meeting place of the European Championship squad in Blankenhain on Sunday due to a stomach bug. The team is currently at a training camp in Thuringia until Friday.
Neuer will now face another setback in his attempted comeback with the DFB team. Before the international games against France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1) in March, he had to step away from the DFB quarters following a training injury. Marc-André ter Stegen filled in for both games as the starting goalkeeper. Regardless, the 32-year-old from FC Barcelona is preparing to sit on the bench as the backup goalie once more for another major tournament.
Neuer expected to return to DFB goal against Ukraine
The DFB stated that Neuer should arrive in Blankenhain as soon as possible. His planned return to DFB action is set for June 3 in the friendly game against Ukraine in Nuremberg. Neuer last played an international match a year and a half ago in Germany's early exit from the World Cup in Qatar during their final group match against Costa Rica (4:2).
