Missing 55-year-old vacationer rescued in Bergen
A 55-year-old hiker near Schwaz in Austria has been found by mountain rescuers, soaked and hypothermic. The Belgian was taken to hospital. Relatives had reported the hiker missing on Saturday evening after two days without contact, as the Tyrolean police announced on Sunday.
He had set off on a Karwendel crossing on October 29. He then lost his way and slipped several times, a police spokesperson explained on Monday. The man injured his ankle in the process.
"However, he still managed to descend to the valley floor and place himself in an open area, with the ulterior motive that his brother - with whom he was in constant contact - would initiate a search operation if he did not come forward," the spokesperson reported. During a search flight by the police helicopter, the man was finally found near a stream on Sunday morning.
Despite the man's successful self-rescue, hiking accidents in mountains can be unpredictable. Inadequate preparation or unfavorable weather conditions can lead to serious incidents while exploring the majestic peaks.
