Municipalities - Misconception about Greifswald parking fees

Following an error, Greifswald's residents' parking fees will have to be reconsidered after all. Fees paid from the end of April this year will be refunded, the Hanseatic city announced on Friday. In addition, resident parking permits are to be issued free of charge from now until the end of March until the expected new regulations are in place. However, applications can currently only be submitted by those whose permit has already expired, will expire soon or are applying for a resident parking permit for the first time.

The background to this is that the scale of fees issued at the end of April, according to which 150 euros per year were normally due, was initially deemed unlawful due to a ruling by the Federal Administrative Court in relation to another city. At a further meeting, however, Greifswald's citizens were unable to agree on an amount.

As a compromise between the demands, Mayor Stefan Fassbinder (Greens) spoke out in favor of 90 euros, which was to be regulated by ordinance. The legal department's examination has now revealed that the fees cannot be set by the Lord Mayor alone and that the municipal council must decide on the amount, which is due to happen in the spring.
