Accident on the sidelines of the European Championship - Minute's silence for the dead motorcycle policeman
One week after the traffic accident that resulted in the death of a 61-year-old motorcycle police officer during an escort duty for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in Stuttgart, his family and the police are mourning publicly. On Monday, a moment of silence will be observed in memory of the officer in the courtyard of the New Castle in Stuttgart. "We would like to express our sympathy collectively as a police family, with friends, family members, and the public," the police presidium announced on Friday. The moment of silence will take place exactly at 11.18 am - the time of the accident - in the presence of Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) for the 61-year-old.
During the ride on the previous Monday, a 69-year-old car driver collided with the motorcycle of the officer. The motorcycle of the policeman was flung against that of his 27-year-old colleague, who had blocked the intersection. The 61-year-old died, and the 27-year-old was seriously injured.
The accident triggered an investigation by the local police, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future. Despite the tragic accident, soccer matches continued in Baden-Württemberg, reminding everyone of the importance of road safety. The government in Hungary also expressed their condolences, with Prime Minister Viktor Orban sending his sympathies to the family of the deceased officer.
