Ministry: Number of charging points to be increased almost fivefold
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the number of publicly accessible charging points for electric vehicles is to increase from the current 18,500 to more than 90,000 by 2030. This is the aim of a new concept from the state government, which was presented in Cologne on Thursday at a specialist conference on electric mobility in NRW. "To ensure that even more people will be able to charge their electric cars quickly and easily in the future, even without private charging facilities, around 66,000 publicly accessible normal charging points and more than 7,000 fast charging points must be added by 2030," according to a statement from the Ministry of Economic Affairs. Among other things, the concept provides for further funding for charging infrastructure.
New charging points are also to be increasingly installed at rental apartments and workplaces. Around 550,000 charging points at workplaces and 1.5 million charging points at residential buildings are needed by 2030.
"The future of mobility is electric," emphasized Economics and Climate Protection Minister Mona Neubaur (Greens). Alternative drive systems are the only way to achieve the transport revolution and reach climate protection targets. In North Rhine-Westphalia, no one should have to worry about where to charge their vehicle in future.
According to the ministry, more than 256,000 battery-powered cars were registered in NRW at the beginning of July. The state government expects this figure to rise to three million by 2030. In total, just under 10.5 million cars were registered in North Rhine-Westphalia at the beginning of January.
The installation of electric charging points will also be promoted at car rental agencies, aiming to provide around 10,000 such points by 2030. This increase in charging points will help reduce traffic congestion, as more people switch to electric vehicles, eventually making car journey energy-efficient.
