Unlawful activity or misdeed. - Minister pushes for increased ATM security

The ATM explosion incidents are still occurring, according to the minister. She believes that the issue has moved to other federal states. Therefore, she deems it necessary to increase the penalty. The minister highlighted that every criminal act is unacceptable and demonstrates the growing recklessness of the criminals who deliberately put innocent lives at risk. To date, 27 suspects have been arrested.

Some significant progress has been made in the reduction of ATM explosions in Lower Saxony this year. According to recent reports, as of May 21, 2024, there have been only nine incidents, compared to 18 in the same period last year (2023). In the entire year 2022, 68 cases were recorded, worse than the 31 incidents in the corresponding period in 2022.

Minister Behrens attributes the reduction in the number of explosions to the work of the police and the upgrades in the security systems. The cases are being centrally handled in the police stations and the Osnabrück Prosecutor's Office, with an evaluation process in place. A task force was also established at the State Criminal Office in 2022.
