Minister President Weil receives Federal Cross of Merit
Lower Saxony's head of government Stephan Weil will be honored with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on Friday (12:00). According to the Office of the Federal President, Steinmeier is following a decades-old practice of awarding the Order of Merit to long-standing heads of government of the federal states. This honors their outstanding role in the federal system of the Federal Republic of Germany.
In addition to Weil, Malu Dreyer (SPD/Rhineland-Palatinate), Winfried Kretschmann (Greens/Baden-Württemberg), Dietmar Woidke (SPD/Brandenburg), Reiner Haseloff (CDU/Saxony-Anhalt) and Bodo Ramelow (Left Party/Thuringia) will also be honored. Former Minister President and Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU/Bavaria) will also be honored with the Order in Berlin's Bellevue Palace.
According to the Office of the Federal President, those who will now receive the medals have rendered outstanding services to the common good in Germany over many years in numerous political functions and also in an honorary capacity.
Their offices require a high degree of personal commitment, the Office of the Federal President added. In times of great political challenges, the politicians assume responsibility for important decisions in their states and, as members of the Bundesrat, for Germany as a whole. They also contribute to Germany's image in the world.
The Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will bestow the Order of Merit on various Federal state leaders, including Stephan Weil, recognizing their significant contributions to the federal system of Germany. Apart from Weil, Malu Dreyer, Winfried Kretschmann, Dietmar Woidke, Reiner Haseloff, and Bodo Ramelow will also receive awards for their long-term dedication and impact in their respective states and in the Bundesrat.
