Minister President Dreyer receives Federal Cross of Merit
Rhineland-Palatinate Minister-President Malu Dreyer (SPD) and five of her colleagues will be awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin on Friday (12.00). In addition to Dreyer, Winfried Kretschmann (Greens/Baden-Württemberg), Dietmar Woidke (SPD/Brandenburg), Stephan Weil (SPD/Lower Saxony), Reiner Haseloff (CDU/Saxony-Anhalt) and Bodo Ramelow (Left Party/Thuringia) will be honored. The former Bavarian Minister President and former Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) will also receive the order.
According to the Office of the Federal President, Steinmeier is following a decades-old practice of awarding the Cross of Merit to long-serving heads of government of the federal states. This honors their outstanding role in the federal system of the Federal Republic of Germany. Those who are now receiving the medals have rendered outstanding services to the common good in Germany over many years in numerous political functions and also in an honorary capacity.
Their offices required a high degree of personal commitment, the Office of the Federal President added. In times of great political challenges, the politicians assume responsibility for important decisions in their states and, as members of the Bundesrat, for Germany as a whole.
The Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, will also bestow the Federal Cross of Merit on the Federal States' leaders, including Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister-President Malu Dreyer, recognizing their significant contributions to the federal system of the Federal Republic of Germany over many years. The Federal President traditionally awards the Cross of Merit to long-serving heads of government of the federal states, honoring their distinguished roles and extraordinary services to the common good.
