Parliament - Minister: Payments for independent schools increased
Education Minister Helmut Holter (Left Party) considers independent schools in Thuringia to be adequately funded. "The independent schools in Thuringia are doing well," said Holter in the state parliament in Erfurt on Wednesday. In 2013, only 126 million euros were spent from the state's education budget to support independent schools. Last year, the figure was 227 million euros. That is an increase of 80 percent.
In contrast, spending on state schools only increased by 23 percent in the same period. It is therefore a myth that the red-red-green coalition does not provide sufficient funding for independent schools, said the minister.
Representatives of the independent school authorities have been criticizing for years that they are being unduly disadvantaged by the state. They argue that the state spends significantly more money per capita on state pupils than on pupils at independent schools.
The members of the state parliament referred a CDU bill to the parliamentary education committee. It is intended to ensure that the independent school authorities can once again have more costs reimbursed by the state than before.

In response to the criticism from independent school authorities, a CDU bill was referred to the state parliament's education committee for consideration, aiming to increase the state's financial support to these schools. During a session in the state parliament in Erfurt, Education Minister Helmut Holter, representing the Left Party, declared that the increase in funding for independent schools from 126 million euros in 2013 to 227 million euros in 2020 in Thuringia was a clear refutation of the misconception that the red-red-green coalition undersupports such schools.
