Minister of the Interior: No reason to be afraid when visiting Christmas markets
There will never be "absolute security" anywhere, Spranger added. Nevertheless, she warned against anxiety in view of the current increased risk of attacks. "That is precisely the purpose of fear - and this fear must not be allowed." Spranger emphasized that security is clearly being worked on across state borders.
North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) also advised worried people to continue going to Christmas markets. "We must not let these people determine how we celebrate our culture and our festivals," said Reul on ARD's Morgenmagazin.
Nevertheless, everyone should "always be vigilant", Reul continued. Attacks are also a permanent threat in Germany. "The security authorities have always pointed this out and we have always been vigilant," emphasized Reul.
In view of the war in the Middle East, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution recently warned of the acute danger of Islamist attacks in Germany.
On Thursday, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser(SPD) emphasized an "intensified threat situation, especially from Islamist terrorism" on the fringes of the Interior Ministers' Conference in Berlin, which will continue until Friday. Faeser announced a continued "tough approach" against Islamist structures in Germany.
