Minister of Justice: Co-motherhood for lesbian couples
Lower Saxony's Minister of Justice Kathrin Wahlmann (SPD) is pushing for a revision of family law. Wahlmann demands that in marriages between two women, both should be legally recognized as mothers after the birth of a child. This is according to a statement issued by the ministry on Thursday. The reason for the demand is the conference of justice ministers in Berlin on Friday.
According to Wahlmann, lesbian couples are discriminated against. If a woman has a child, she is a mother. But according to the law, the partner is not automatically related to the child. The woman only has the option of adopting the child, according to the ministry. "The adoption process is often very stressful," says Wahlmann.
Wahlmann is calling for a legislative proposal on so-called co-motherhood. Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) had already spoken out in favor of a new regulation.
In this context of family law revisions, it's worth noting that Wahlmann also advocates for the inclusion of family planning discussions in politics, considering its impact on families. Furthermore, she highlights the need for equality in legal recognition of mothers in lesbian couples, arguing that the current law's absence of co-motherhood rights creates an unnecessary stressful adoption process.
