Minister Nonnemacher calls for corona masks to be worn

The days of the coronavirus pandemic, when masks were compulsory when shopping and on public transport, seem long gone. But as infection numbers rise, masks are making a comeback in hospitals. Health Minister Nonnemacher also sees the need.

Health - Minister Nonnemacher calls for corona masks to be worn

In view of the rising number of coronavirus infections, Brandenburg's Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens) has called on people to wear protective masks again. "Masks can provide effective protection against infection with the coronavirus and should be used on public transport and when shopping, for example," the minister told the German Press Agency. She asked citizens to act responsibly and show consideration: "People with a coronavirus infection should stay at home if possible and avoid contact with others."

The Ernst von Bergmann Hospital in Potsdam had reintroduced the obligation for visitors and service providers to wear a protective mask at the weekend due to increasing coronavirus infections. Visits to wards with an active outbreak are prohibited there.

Other hospitals merely spoke of recommendations when asked by Deutsche Presse-Agentur. "If you have cold symptoms, we recommend wearing an FFP2 mask," said the Brandenburg/Havel University Hospital. "Visits to the hospital should not take place with a proven Covid-19 infection". These recommendations also apply at Frankfurt (Oder) Hospital. There, relatives of patients in particularly high-risk areas are also being asked to voluntarily wear an FFP2 mask.

"It is right that hospitals and other medical and care facilities should, under their own responsibility, require visitors to wear a mask to protect vulnerable groups, depending on the infection situation," said Minister Nonnemacher. "And we are calling for vaccination against coronavirus and influenza."
