- Minister for Housing: 'The knot is broken'

The Saarland has achieved a breakthrough in housing promotion, according to estimates by Minister of Construction Reinhold Jost (SPD). "The bottleneck has been broken. People are now actually ready to start," he said. The Saarland has "lost a lot of money" in the past, but that is now a thing of the past. "We want and will build the money that is available to us," he announced.

In the years 2020 to 2022, the Saarland had to return funds of 35 million euros to the federal government, but this year it is expected that none will have to be returned. Currently, there are over 900 units in planning, review, or implementation for social and affordable housing. The Saarland promotional bank SIKB has around 104 million euros tied up for this.

Federal Minister of Construction Klara Geywitz (SPD) will visit Saarbrücken in August to inform herself about a project at the university.

Minister Jost expressed confidence that it would be possible to reach the target of 5,000 social housing units by the end of the legislative period. "We can actually get within reach of this," he said. The new housing promotion law and the upcoming amendment to the state building code will contribute to this. Jost: "Now we want to shed the last fetters to strengthen this flow."

The Saarland's recent success in housing promotion, as noted by Minister Jost, is largely due to the implementation of effective housing policy. With the new housing promotion law and amendments to the state building code, the Saarland aims to eliminate remaining barriers and build the available funds towards its target of 5,000 social housing units.
