The Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) is anticipated to be present at the funeral ceremony for the slain police officer, Rouven Laur, who was tragically stabbed in a violent attack in Mannheim. Besides the Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) and State Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU), other attendees at the event on Friday in Mannheim will include police personnel and family members, as per the declaration from the Stuttgart Interior Ministry.
Those attending the function being held at the Rosengarten Congress Center consist primarily of police officers and relatives, the police previously disclosed. There will also be a live screening of the event on Friedrichsplatz, where condolence ledgers will be placed.
Two weeks ago, a 25-year-old Afghan assailed five participants of a protest organized by Pax Europa, an Islam-critical group, as well as a police officer, using a knife on the Mannheim market square. The 29-year-old officer subsequently succumbed to his injuries.
The Federal President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, had previously characterised the violent incident in Mannheim as a "brutal terrorist act." The perpetrator seemed to be driven by a political, most likely Islamist, motive.
