Energy - Minister comments on LNG approval procedure
Agriculture and Environment Minister Till Backhaus (SPD) is hosting his traditional end-of-year press conference in Schwerin on Thursday (11.00 a.m.). In addition to the situation in agriculture, he will also comment on climate protection legislation and the current status of the approval process for the controversial LNG terminal on Rügen.
The liquefied natural gas terminal is initially due to go into operation in January with a regasification plant (FSRU), as announced by the Stralsund State Office for Agriculture and the Environment at the end of November. The approval process is still ongoing. The fact that the authorities intend to dispense with an environmental impact assessment recently made the headlines. Critics of the terminal fear environmental damage as a result of its operation and adverse effects on tourism.
However, the pipeline connecting the natural gas from the terminal to the mainland has already been fully approved. The gas is to be fed into the European pipeline network at Lubmin.
