Internet - Minister: A quarter of households have a fiber optic connection

Running Internet: Over a quarter of the 3.1 million households in Hessen now have a fiber-optic connection, according to Digital Minister Kristina Sinemus. From the end of 2022 to the end of 2023, this proportion is expected to increase by 10 percentage points to over 26 percent. The CDU politician made this statement on Thursday at the sidelines of the 14th so-called Gigabit Summit with experts in Wiesbaden. Sinemus was referring to fiber-optic connections that do not end at the distribution box but at buildings themselves. The goal is to achieve comprehensive fiber-optic expansion in Hessen by 2030.

Not all citizens consider such a connection necessary for higher bandwidth - suppliers build underground fiber-optic networks only when a certain percentage of households in a street or housing estate have previously signed corresponding contracts. Minister Sinemus therefore advocated for the benefits of this new technology: In addition to significantly higher performance capabilities, there is usually an appreciation of the respective property. In addition, electricity consumption is reduced compared to other connections. "Fiber optics belong to the future," emphasized Sinemus.

The parliamentary group leader of the FDP opposition in the Wiesbaden state parliament, Oliver Stirbeck, criticized that according to the Gigabit-Handbook of the Federal Network Agency, Hessen ranks only twelfth among the federal states in terms of fiber-optic connections up to the house. This is clearly not enough.

  1. Minister Kristina Sinemus, from the CDU, highlighted the benefits of a fiber-optic connection directly to buildings during the Gigabit Summit in Wiesbaden, stating that it leads to higher property values and reduced electricity consumption.
  2. By the end of 2023, it's anticipated that over 26% of households in Hessen will have a fiber-optic connection, thanks to a planned 10 percentage point increase from the current figure of over 26%, as revealed by Digital Minister Kristina Sinemus.
  3. In a press conference, Kristina Sinemus, the digital minister, highlighted Wiesbaden's ambition to expand fiber-optic networks widely across the state by 2030, aiming to provide a fiber-optic connection for every house in Hesse.
  4. Kristina Sinemus, the Digital Minister from Hesse, stressed the importance of fiber-optic technology at the Gigabit Summit in Wiesbaden, emphasizing that fiber-optic connections are crucial for ensuring a seamless and advanced fiber-optic connection in both rural and urban areas.
