Medical facilities - Million-dollar shortage at Magdeburg University Hospital

The University Hospital Magdeburg is predicted to experience a deficit amounting to about 47.6 million euros this year. The hospital's final financial report is currently being drafted, according to the Science Ministry's reply to a query sent by the "Magdeburger Volksstimme" news outlet.

Eva von Angern, head of the Left faction in the state parliament, stated on Wednesday that this deficit is concerning, especially with the background of the subpar administration at the University Clinic in recent times.

Numerous healthcare facilities are currently struggling with financial issues. They argue that their expenses are rising more quickly than the payments they receive from health insurance companies for treating patients. Furthermore, there has been a decrease in the number of patients compared to pre-pandemic levels.

In April, the state government announced its plan to construct a new central facility at the University Hospital Magdeburg, with an estimated cost of approximately one billion euros. Funding is also being allocated for upgrades at the University Hospital Halle in the near future. Last year, the deficit at the latter hospital amounted to 16.8 million euros.
