Cinema - Milli Vanilli film has world premiere in Munich

The story of Milli Vanilli began 35 years ago in Munich - now a film about the scandalous band is celebrating its world premiere there. This Monday (7.30 pm), director Simon Verhoeven ("Männerherzen"), who also wrote the screenplay for the film, will present his view of what is probably the biggest scam in music history. The title of the film is that of the biggest hit by "Rob" and "Fab", who became global stars without singing themselves: "Girl You Know It's True".

The duo, discovered by Boney M. producer Frank Farian, sold millions of records and even won a Grammy - but only temporarily. After Farian made it known that the two boys had never sung their hits such as "I'm Gonna Miss You" themselves, but had only moved their lips to the voices of others, an outcry went through the music world.

In his film,Verhoeven tells of the beginnings of the two friends Robert "Rob" Pilatus and Fabrice "Fab" Morvan as dancers in Munich clubs, of their meteoric rise, their intoxicating success and their hard crash on the ground.

"Fab", who is invited to the world premiere in Munich as a guest, now works as a singer and songwriter in real life and has four children, is played in the film by Elan Ben Ali; his friend "Rob", who died in 1998 and was buried in Munich, is played by Tijan Njie. Matthias Schweighöfer plays Frank Farian. The film is due to be released in cinemas on December 21.
