Military rule extended by five years in Burkina Faso.
Diallo announced that the extension would commence on July 2nd and endure for five years. During this time, coup leader and acting president Captain Ibrahim Traore would be permitted to participate in any elections.
In a televised broadcast on Saturday, Traore could be seen putting his signature to the revised agreement in front of an enthusiastic audience.
The previous ruling majority was conspicuously absent from the negotiations, as reported by the government's news agency Agence d’Information du Burkina (AIB). Political party activity has largely been suppressed under the military regime.
Burkina Faso has been affected by persistent jihadist violence that has cost thousands of lives over nearly a decade. The country has witnessed two military coups in the year 2022.
In January of the same year, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba seized power through a coup, only to be overthrown by Captain Traoré in September.
