Specialized law enforcement unit of the police took down a 46-year-old man in Berlin, reportedly having a history of pointing a firearm at another individual. Acting upon a court authorized searche, officials busted into his residence in Nikolassee. According to reports, the 46-year-old retaliated with gunfire, prompting the police to retaliate, resulting in his fatal wounding, as confirmed by the police and prosecutor's office in the evening. An investigation into homicide is underway.
Earlier in the day, the 46-year-old is alleged to have threatened a 49-year-old on a caravan site. The statement read, "The man successfully defended himself against the attacker and contacted the authorities." The 49-year-old sustained no injuries and trailed the 46-year-old, witnessing him enter a multi-family dwelling on Dreilindenstraße." The suspect refused to open the door, forcing the officers to break into the apartment in the afternoon.
A dpa correspondent heard a series of loud noises from the multi-family residence that seemed like gunshots. Several ambulances and a helicopter for rescue were present at the scene.
The apartment complex is situated in the Berlin district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, close to the Wannsee. The area primarily comprises villas and single-family homes. The building housing the man became his refuge is known for social housing apartments. Adjacent to it is a primary school. A resident informed dpa that roughly 100 studio apartments exist within the building.
The specialized police unit was prompted to intervene due to the 46-year-old's past history of threatening individuals with a firearm, as revealed by the police. After the encounter, the police will likely provide updates about their interactions with the individual under investigation.
