Migration tasks in the Ministry of the Interior are a good thing

The fact that the Ministry of the Interior will in future be responsible for the reception and accommodation of refugees in Thuringia is a good development from the point of view of the rural districts. "This is a sensible thing," said the President of the Association of Districts, Martina Schweinsburg (CDU), in Erfurt on Friday. The districts have done very well so far with Interior Minister Georg Maier and State Secretary Katharina Schenk (both SPD). It is a trusting cooperation in which "you can also rely on a promise from time to time".

The Greiz district administrator expressed her sympathy for Justice and Migration Minister Doreen Denstädt (Greens), who has only been in office since February. "When Ms. Denstädt took over, the car had already hit the wall." She had good will, but little experience. At least she had tried to introduce a health check in the initial reception facilities.

Schweinsburg went on to say that it was also good that the state administration office responsible for the state facilities was directly under the Ministry of the Interior. This means that there will be less wrangling over competencies in the government in future. Vice President and Gotha District Administrator Onno Eckert (SPD) also expressed his confidence in the planned restructuring.

It was officially announced on Friday that Denstädt would lose a large part of her responsibility for refugee policy in Thuringia. The red-red-green coalition had decided on this after lengthy debates. Denstädt has been under pressure from the opposition and local authorities for months because Thuringia's initial reception facilities are regularly at the limits of their capacity.

The decision to transfer the responsibility for refugee reception and accommodation from Justice and Migration to the Ministry of the Interior will likely ease the burden on municipalities dealing with refugee migration in Thuringia. This shift isexpected to improve the cooperation between the governments and local authorities, ensuring a smoother process for refugees.
