Migration: NRW SPD wants the state government to provide its own impetus

Following the agreements reached by the federal and state governments on migration policy, the North Rhine-Westphalian SPD has called on the state government to take additional initiatives of its own. "The ball is in the court of the black-green coalition to support the municipalities with their own initiatives," said the chairwoman of the NRW SPD, Sarah Philipp, to the German Press Agency on Tuesday. The people could "rightly expect more initiative from their Minister President".

The overnight resolutions by the federal and state governments "have the potential to become a relief package for cities, municipalities and districts", said Philipp. "They are a clear step forward." The federal government is providing a further 3.5 billion euros to take in refugees. Now it must be ensured that the money is passed on in full to the municipalities. The SPD in NRW will pay attention to this. "I expect the state government not to rest on its laurels when it comes to the federal government's promises." Together with Achim Post, member of the Bundestag, Philipp leads the state SPD association with the largest number of members.

The heads of government of the federal states and Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) reached an agreement on the distribution of refugee costs after an overnight meeting early Tuesday morning. Measures to reduce irregular migration to Germany were also agreed. The agreement provides for a change in the system for financing refugee costs and a reduction in benefits for asylum seekers.

The North Rhine-Westphalian SPD, led by Sarah Philipp, believes that the state government should complement the federal initiatives on migration with its own, providing much-needed support to municipalities. To ensure that the additional funding from the federal government for accommodating refugees reaches the municipalities in full, the SPD in NRW will closely monitor the actions of the federal states and the Federal Government.
