- Midyatli: Clear opposition is needed
Serpil Midyatli, the chairwoman of the SPD faction in Schleswig-Holstein, accuses the state government of inactivity in many areas of politics. "This government is not addressing the problems that exist in the state," she told dpa. Therefore, a more robust opposition course is necessary. "I'm convinced that people want to see us fighting." The aim of social democracy is to make life easier for people. "Then we have to take on those who don't want to do that."
The state government regularly shifts responsibility to Berlin or passes problems on to the municipalities. An example is the reduction of urban development funding by several million euros per year. "We say, that's not acceptable. That can't happen, especially now when our city centers are decaying, and we need more affordable housing." The state government cannot simply say that the municipalities should come up with the money themselves.
More than 15,600 daycare places are missing in the state, according to the faction chairwoman. "That's not acceptable." There are also problems with the claim to full-day care in schools by 2026. The schools need renovations. Midyatli accuses the state government of merely papering over problems with money in the past years when funds were available. "Now, we need answers. And if the state government doesn't provide them, it's my job as the opposition to do so."
During the corona crisis, we had to stand together. Then, we received many relief programs and money from Berlin. Even now, the opposition in the state parliament has made an offer with the Schleswig-Holstein Pact for Investments. "The Minister-President rejected it," Midyatli criticized.
The SPD faction in Schleswig-Holstein has proposed the Schleswig-Holstein Pact for Investments to provide much-needed funds, but the Minister-President has rejected it. The lack of adequate daycare facilities in the state, with over 15,600 daycare places missing, calls for a lively party to push for solutions.
