Shipbuilding - Meyer Werft begins construction of offshore converter platform
In the greatest crisis in its history, the Papenburg-based Meyer Werft intends to open a new business field and enter the construction of converter platforms for offshore wind parks. For the steel construction of the planned converter platform DolWin delta, the net grid operator and contractor Amprion announced today (from 2 p.m. onwards) that the burning process is planned to begin at the yard. According to reports, it is the first converter platform to be built in Germany in many years.
The net grid operator Amprion had commissioned the Spanish company Dragados and Siemens Energy for the construction of a total of four converter platforms in 2022. The consortium then engaged the Meyer Werft, known for its cruise ships, as a subcontractor.
Converter platforms are large technical installations that stand on firmly anchored piles in the sea. In them, the alternating current produced by wind turbines is converted into direct current. For the ambitious expansion plans of the German government for offshore wind energy, these tonnage-heavy converter platforms are considered an industrial key component. The production capacities for this are scarce.
According to the German Wind Energy Offshore Association (BWO), it comes to orders in the millions when building converter platforms. "I'm very pleased that we're getting another location in Germany for building converter platforms with Meyer Werft in Papenburg," said BWO managing director Stefan Thimm to the German Press Agency. "That's important to be able to create value and employment here, to keep transport routes short, and to reduce dependencies on international supply chains."
