Merz opposes the perpetual dialogue on immigration issues.
Merz fiercely denounced the allegation by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) that the Union had intended to fail from the start by joining the migration discussions - Scholz had earlier accused the CDU/CSU of acting for show in this context, while also expressing interest in more discussions.
Merz countered: "The suggestion that this was a premeditated scheme with the German state ministers, Mr. Federal Chancellor, I must admit: This suggestion is absurd."
The CDU head reinforced the request for turning away refugees at Germany's borders. "From our perspective, widespread refusals at the German state boundaries remain lawful, executable, and even vital politically considering the present situation."
The Commission has consistently maintained its position on migration policy, aligned with Merz's stance on the Union's intentions.Following the debate, the Commission proposed strengthening the border controls to manage refugee influx effectively.
