CDU head Friedrich Merz endeavors to strike a deal on increased regulation of unlawful immigration as swiftly as possible, ideally before the 2025 Federal Parliament election campaign commences. "I genuinely hope we can tackle this issue in a manner that it doesn't turn into a major focus for the 2025 Federal Parliament election," the opposition leader in the Federal Parliament stated post-meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in Berlin.

Merz conceded, reflecting on Chancellor Angela Merkel's (CDU) tenure, "We're not blameless in this predicament." His party holds a share of the responsibility for the ongoing issues, many of which have grown more complex. Consequently, he feels obliged, in his capacity as CDU chairman, to declare: "We need to play a role in diminishing this issue once more."

The Federal election in 2025 could potentially see this immigration regulation issue becoming a prominent topic, given Merz's hopes for a less focused campaign. As the CDU head, Merz acknowledged that his party shares some responsibility in the complex immigration issues, implying a need for meaningful action before the upcoming Federal election.
