Merle Frohms warns of the consequences of concussion
After her own experience, national soccer goalkeeper Merle Frohms has warned of the consequences of concussion in competitive sport. "I actually underestimated how long I would still have problems. Especially when it came to perception. First of all, I had to remedy neurological weaknesses," said the 28-year-old from VfL Wolfsburg in a DFB broadcast ahead of the German women's Nations League match against Denmark this Friday (8.30pm/ZDF) in Rostock. "That's why it's really an injury that shouldn't be underestimated under any circumstances."
Frohms suffered a concussion in training at the beginning of October and missed her club and the DFB team in the games against Wales (5:1) and Iceland (2:0). She was replaced by Chelsea FC's Ann-Katrin Berger, but the regular keeper is now expected to return between the posts. Against Denmark and next Tuesday in Wales, interim national coach Horst Hrubesch's team will be looking to keep their chances of qualifying for the 2024 Olympics in Paris alive.
"I first had to find my way around the pitch again," said Frohms about her forced break. Dealing with head injuries is a recurring theme in soccer. Temporary substitutions are also being discussed, as is already common in some sports.
Frohms thinks this is a "very good point. I was glad that I had doctors around me who were very careful and didn't want to take any risks. You simply need responsible people around you to protect the players and, in case of doubt, make decisions in favor of their health," she explained.
