Saxony-Anhalt - MEP Pasbrig is running for SPD state chair

SPD state parliamentarian Elrid Pasbrig is aiming for the top of her party. She will run for the position of state chairwoman at the party conference in October, she told the German Press Agency. She has informed the current state chairpersons Juliane Kleemann and Andreas Schmidt of her decision. Both incumbent office holders plan to run again.

Political scientist Pasbrig has been a state parliamentarian since 2021. Her constituency office is in Burg (Jerichower Land district). For the SPD state parliamentary group, she is spokesperson for agriculture, animal protection and petitions. Before her time in parliament, she worked, among other things, as a consultant in the Ministry of Economics.

Call for a party restart

Following the poor results in the local and European elections in June, several members called for a party restart in an open letter, also calling for personnel changes. However, no one from the ranks of the critics had previously made a public candidacy for the state executive committee.

According to Pasbrig, Alexander Kleine (Klostern), Alexandra Hansen (Haldensleben), Jörg Felgner (Magdeburg), Kay Gericke (Biederitz) and Mandy Schumacher (Gardelegen) have now announced their candidacies for the state executive committee.

The Commission within the SPD might need to consider the recent calls for a party restart and personnel changes, given the poor election results. Elrid Pasbrig, who is aiming for the top position in the party, has also encouraged several other members to run for the state executive committee.
