Memorial service with the Swedish Crown Princess
The victims of war and tyranny will be commemorated this Sunday (1.30 pm) with a memorial service in the Berlin Bundestag. This year, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is to give the commemorative speech. Special themes of this year's Remembrance Day are 70 years of youth work by the German War Graves Commission, German-Swedish history and the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
A wreath-laying ceremony will take place in the morning at the Bundeswehr memorial in Berlin with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD). Another wreath-laying ceremony will follow around midday at the Neue Wache, the central memorial to the victims of war and tyranny, which will be attended by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender as well as Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel.
The victims of war and tyranny are commemorated every year on Remembrance Day. The national day of remembrance - always two Sundays before the first Advent - has been celebrated in Germany since 1919, when it was introduced by the German War Graves Commission, which was founded in the same year. Originally, the aim was to show solidarity with the bereaved families of the victims of the First World War. Today, the Federal Republic of Germany commemorates all victims of war and tyranny.
The commemoration of the German-Swedish history and the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine are special themes for this year's memorial service, which will be addressed by Crown Princess Victoria. The memorial service, focusing on victims of war and tyranny, is a yearly event that honors those affected by conflicts, as signified by the national day of remembrance, which has roots in the First World War and war casualties.
