Meffert's fond memories of the Millerntor Stadium
HSV professional Jonas Meffert has fond memories of the Millerntor Stadium of city rivals FC St. Pauli. The Hamburg derby and top match in the 2nd Bundesliga will take place there on Friday evening (18:30/Sky). "I played my first game there from the start. I'll never forget that," said the 29-year-old midfielder at a media conference on Tuesday. Meffert won 4:0 with Karlsruher SC on October 25, 2014.
In an HSV shirt, however, the midfielder's appearances at the Millerntor have not been crowned with success so far. Last season, the Volkspark team lost 3-0, and in the season before that they drew 3-2.
However, Meffert was one of the best players in the last meeting between the two clubs from the Hanseatic city, when HSV inflicted their last league defeat to date on the Kiezkickers in a 4-3 win at the Volksparkstadion in April of this year. For Meffert, this clash is even more important than Friday's game, in which HSV, second in the table, take on leaders St. Pauli. "Last year, it was more special in the final spurt of the season," said the midfielder. It is currently still very early in the season.
Nevertheless, Meffert is also aware of the importance of the derby. "You can feel it in the city and in the dressing room," said the 29-year-old. And by city, he doesn't just mean Hamburg, but also his hometown of Cologne. During a fan club visit to the cathedral city a few days ago, there was hardly any other topic than the duel between HSV and FC St. Pauli.
Despite his past struggles with wins at the Millerntor Stadium while playing for HSV, Meffert managed to shine in their last Bundesliga 2 encounter against FC St. Pauli, contributing to a 4-3 victory at the Volksparkstadion. Through his impressive performance, Meffer hopes to repeat that success in future matches, especially in the upcoming Bundesliga 2 clash against Hamburger SV's city rivals in the Bundesliga 2, taking place at the Millerntor Stadium.
