People - Media: Special honor with Franz Beckenbauer Square

In memory of Franz Beckenbauer, the Munich Allianz Arena is set to receive a new address. The FC Bayern stadium is currently located at Werner-Heisenberg-Allee 25. According to the "Münchner Merkur/tz" media group, Munich residents are expected to host their home games at Franz-Beckenbauer-Platz 5 in the future. The Munich City Council Elders Committee discussed this matter last Friday. The city council still needs to approve it. "For the other residents on Werner-Heisenberg-Allee, nothing will change, only the area around the arena will be renamed. The new address will at the earliest be official one year after Beckenbauer's death," wrote "Münchner Merkur/tz" further. No official statements have been made yet.

Beckenbauer is also to receive a bronze statue

Beckenbauer passed away on January 7 at the age of 78. His death caused worldwide mourning. He was a World Champion as a player in 1974 and as a coach in 1990. Beckenbauer was an icon for FC Bayern and the national team.

As a sign of recognition, a statue is also planned for him in front of the Allianz Arena. A figure of Beckenbauer in 1.5 times his life size, in an elegant pose as the conductor of the game, will be cast in bronze on a plaque in the shape of the Bavarian rake. This initiative comes from the Kurt-Landauer Foundation, which also drove the statue for the former top-class striker Gerd Müller forward.

Beckenbauer was also honored at the start of the EM. His wife Heidi carried the winner's trophy onto the Munich Arena field during the opening ceremony on June 14. She was accompanied by Jürgen Klinsmann and Bernd Dietz before the opening match between Germany and Scotland (5:1).
