The economic slowdown that has been going on for months is also reflected in employment figures. This is particularly evident in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Statistics - Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania records decline in employment

The number of people in employment in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has fallen, contrary to the positive national trend. In particular, jobs subject to social insurance contributions were lost, while marginal employment rose again. As the Statistical Office announced in Schwerin on Tuesday, citing the latest data from the Working Group on Employment Accounting of the federal states, 767,100 people were employed in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the third quarter. This was 1,000 fewer than in the same quarter of the previous year.

The decline therefore amounted to 0.1 percent. Apart from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, only Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt recorded a decline. Across Germany, the statistics show an increase in the number of people in employment of 0.7 percent. The city states of Hamburg (1.8) and Berlin (1.5) recorded the strongest growth. However, the trend there also lost momentum over the course of the year.

According to statistics, nine out of ten people in employment in the North East are employees. Self-employed and freelancers are also included. 19 percent of people work in the manufacturing sector, making it one of the most important economic sectors in the country. However, the number of people employed in industry and construction fell by 1.2 percent compared to the previous year, while a slight increase was recorded nationwide.

There were also job losses in the agricultural sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to the statistics office, the slightly positive development in the large services sector was unable to compensate for these losses. Here, too, employment growth of 0.2% in the north-east was far weaker than the national average of 0.9%.

In 2022, employment growth in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was already weaker than in most other federal states. New hires, particularly in retail, gastronomy and the public sector, contributed to the number of people in employment almost reaching the pre-corona level again at an annual average of 761,800. However, at 0.6%, the increase compared to 2021 was only half the national average.
