- Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is establishment of a drone defense facility
Authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are establishing a drone security hub to deter misuse of uncrewed aerial vehicles. "Future threats from hazardous or unidentified drones will be identified promptly, and their radio link might be disrupted when necessary," stated Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) in a release. "They can also be made to land." As per the Interior Department, cops at the drone proficiency center are presently undergoing training in advanced tech, including drone identification systems and signal blockers.
Last year, roughly 130 drone-related incidents were recorded.
"These miniature flying gadgets can pose a danger to our vital infrastructure or be employed for more severe wrongdoings," Pegel cautioned. In 2023, the Interior Department documented 128 police-related incidents involving drone operations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In 2022, the number was 107. Such occurrences take place when a drone hovers over residential areas or crowds, or approaches an airport. A criminal act is perpetrated, for instance, when aerial photos violate an individual's privacy, if there's a dangerous intrusion into air traffic, or if it flies within a restricted flight zone.
Cops also utilize drones.
According to Pegel, the state police presently possess 17 drones. "Currently, these aerial devices are deployed in diverse scenarios, such as locating missing people or collecting evidence in tough-to-reach territories, and capturing aerial views of accident sites or events." They were utilized, for example, during home matches of FC Hansa Rostock or the "Airbeat One" festival, according to the department.
The Commission will oversee the operations of the drone security hub to ensure effective deterrence of unwanted drone activities. With the increase in drone-related incidents last year and the continued threat they pose to public safety, it is crucial for The Commission to take a proactive role in addressing this issue.
