Municipalities - Mayor of Illerkirchberg: Community has grown together
Since the fatal knife attack on two schoolgirls in Illerkirchberg a year ago, the small community has grown together, according to Mayor Markus Häußler (non-party). An interplay of small steps has meant that the community has been able to maintain its openness and the mood in Illerkirchberg has not changed, Häußler told the "Südwest Presse" on Tuesday on the first anniversary of the crime. "The community has grown together."
"We have set out together to learn how to deal with what we have experienced." The civil dialog was not easy. With their open letter, the parents helped to ensure that grief and anger in the community did not turn into hatred. The letter stated, for example: "No resentment or anger is worth sacrificing our shared peace." Häußler said that the topics of murder and crime and the issue of flight must be sharply separated so that people are not stigmatized. Right-wing groups had "failed miserably" in their attempt to incite the citizens of Illerkirchberg.
On December 5, 2022, a 27-year-old man who had come to Germany from Eritrea as an asylum seeker attacked two girls with a knife on their way to school. The 14-year-old girl died and her 13-year-old friend was seriously injured. The Ulm Regional Court sentenced the man to life imprisonment at the beginning of July. The verdict is not yet final; the defendant has appealed against it.
