Municipalities - Mayor Haase for municipal transformation center
The Lord Mayor of Mainz, Nino Haase, can imagine a kind of experimental laboratory for more digitalization in local government in the state capital. A municipal transformation center where things could be tried out would be conceivable, the non-party politician told the German Press Agency in Mainz. "As the state capital, we can lead the way."
It is becoming increasingly difficult for local authorities to find sufficient and qualified staff - and this in the face of major challenges. Mainz alone will have to fill around 6,000 positions by 2035 - "a mammoth task", said Haase. The city is growing, but the administration has not grown to the same extent in recent years. Against this backdrop, parts of the administration need to be mechanized. Artificial intelligence (AI) can take over tasks in one place or another. This would relieve the burden on staff, who could then devote more time to housing or business development, for example.
Haase would like to see more cooperation across municipal boundaries in the area of training skilled workers. In the biotechnology sector, for example, which is so important for Mainz, there is a lack of laboratory technicians, said the mayor. The entire surrounding area could benefit from cooperation.
