- Mayer reports: Government establishes gun-free areas within Cabinet

Following the incident in Solingen, SPD's Interior Minister Georg Maier anticipates a judgment from Thuringia's cabinet regarding gun-free areas. The options for municipalities to establish such areas are planned to be enhanced, Maier stated during an MDR broadcast where state election contenders addressed queries from viewers.

The cabinet aims to establish the necessary legal framework on Tuesday, enabling counties and self-governed cities to make their own decisions regarding knife and gun-free zones, Maier explained. As the SPD's lead candidate for the state election, he made these statements.

CDU's top candidate, Mario Voigt, countered by claiming that Germany already enforces "the strictest gun regulations globally." In his perspective, enhancing surveillance cameras and furnishing all police officials with body cameras are the potential solutions.

The gathering of the top candidates touched upon various aspects of state politics. However, some spectators voiced their dissatisfaction towards the answers given by the state politicians, finding them inadequately clear.

Maier mentioned during the MDR broadcast that options for municipalities to establish gun-free areas are planned, under the proposed legal framework by Thuringia's cabinet. In response to Maier's statements, Voigt asserts that Germany already has some of the strictest gun regulations worldwide.
