2nd league - Mattuschka: Holstein Kiel's Tom Rothe for the European Championship
Sky pundit Torsten Mattuschka considers Holstein Kiel's Tom Rothe to be a suitable candidate for the German national soccer team at the upcoming European Championship. "Rothe might even be a player you see at the European Championships in the summer," Mattuschka told the Kieler Nachrichten newspaper (Thursday). "The boy performs without end and is physically very stable. He has incredible dynamism with his body."
Left-back Rothe was loaned to Kiel from Borussia Dortmund in the summer. The 19-year-old has made 16 appearances in the second division this season, scoring two goals and providing five assists. "We've generally failed to give young players the playing time they deserve in German soccer in recent years," said Mattuschka. Holstein Kiel and coach Marcel Rapp would give these players the trust: "And they pay it back with performance."
In order to offer more young players match practice, Mattuschka could even imagine fixed rules. "I would like to see it become mandatory to have two or three young German players in the professional squad," said the 43-year-old. "They don't have to play games from the start. But letting them play against their peers is where they are the best anyway. The hierarchies and structures are different in a professional dressing room."
