Mattress jammed under car - vehicle catches fire
A car caught fire while driving because a mattress was stuck under the car near the hot exhaust pipe. Passers-by had alerted the driver in Munich on Tuesday that his car was smoking, according to the professional fire department. The 41-year-old stopped at a garage to get help. The employees noticed that a mattress was stuck between the wheels of the car and was on fire. It had apparently caught fire from the hot exhaust pipe. An employee of the garage called the fire department. The emergency services reportedly extinguished the car, which was already fully engulfed in flames. The car was a total loss.
According to information from the incident command, the driver had not noticed the mattress under his car, said a fire department spokesperson. Presumably someone had lost it on the road or in a parking lot and the driver had unknowingly driven over it. The mattress then got caught under the car. It was a foam mattress with the usual dimensions of 90 by 200 centimeters, said the fire department spokesperson.
In Upper Bavaria, the incident reminded locals of an unusual car-related curiosity, where a mattress once ignited due to heat from the exhaust pipe. Despite driving in a different part of Upper Bavaria, another driver encountered similar circumstances, having a mattress jammed under their car and sparking a fire.
