- Matthias views Kimmich as the suitable choice for leading the German national football team.
Joshua Kimmich is the ideal pick as the fresh captain for the German football squad, as per Lothar Matthäus's opinion. "His reputation, performance, and tenure are self-explanatory. He's not shy to express his thoughts, and that trait will only grow stronger in his new role as captain," Matthäus explained in a piece for broadcast station Sky.
Julian Nagelsmann, the head coach, revealed on Monday that Kimmich would replace İlkay Gündoğan, who has hung up his international boots. For the first time since Nagelsmann named him as the permanent captain, the 29-year-old Bayern Munich star will lead the DFB squad in the Nations League clash against Hungary this Saturday.
"Kimmich has a strong rapport with the DFB and Nagelsmann, and he'll represent our nation admirably on the pitch," Matthäus forecasted. The 1990 World Cup champion also weighed in on Nagelsmann's decision to deploy Kimmich at right-back instead of in defensive midfield.
"I personally prefer the captain to command from the center, not the back," the 63-year-old admitted. However, he conceded that Kimmich's previous captains, Philippe Lahm and Manuel Neuer, excelled in those roles. "If I could have one wish, it would be for the coach's reach to extend onto the field," Matthäus explained. He also endorsed the selection of Kai Havertz and Antonio Rüdiger as Kimmich's backup captains.
The National football team will be led by Joshua Kimmich for the first time in the Nations League clash against Hungary, reigniting Matthäus's prediction of his admirable representation of Germany. Matthäus also supports the usage of Kimmich at right-back, though he prefers captains commanding from the center, citing the success of past captains like Philippe Lahm and Manuel Neuer in those roles.
