Matthäus on the new Union coach: "A big risk"
Lothar Matthäus has expressed skepticism about the appointment of Nenad Bjelica as coach of Bundesliga club 1. FC Union Berlin. "Whether or not you can take on this case with a nobody is of course a big risk," the former world footballer commented on the surprising appointment on pay-TV channel Sky. Relying on him was "certainly surprising for many", said Matthäus.
Bjelica gained experience as a coach in the top divisions in Austria, Poland, Croatia and Turkey. He played in the Champions League with Austria Vienna and Dinamo Zagreb. "Someone who has never coached in the Bundesliga is supposed to save Union Berlin, that's a difficult and delicate task," said Matthäus.
The 52-year-old Croatian was introduced to Union on Sunday. After 15 games without a win, Bjelica will first have to build up the team. Starting work in the middle of the relegation battle is not a problem for the Croatian himself. "My first two jobs in my career were also relegation battles. I am fully convinced of my work. I am very self-confident," he said about himself.
The new coach of 1. FC Union Berlin, Nenad Bjelica, has a notable coaching background in top-tier leagues in Austria, Poland, Croatia, and Turkey. Despite this, Lothar Matthäus views his appointment as coach in the Bundesliga as a significant risk due to his lack of experience in Germany's top league.
