Matthäus criticizes BVB and Terzic: Not "DNA of the team"

Borussia Dortmund and coach Edin Terzic have to put up with further criticism from Lothar Matthäus. "I can't imagine that the problems are solely down to the departure of Jude Bellingham. Dortmund are in a good position in terms of individual players, but somewhere it no longer fits," wrote the record international in his column on the "sky.de" website.

"Professionals who played outstandingly last season are no longer reaching their limits. Emre Can is injured, Julian Brandt shows glimpses of his ability from time to time, but his performances are not consistent either," the Sky expert continued. The 1990 World Cup winner had already criticized Dortmund on "Sky90" on Sunday evening and questioned the team spirit as a whole.

He now accused BVB coach Terzic of choosing the wrong tactics. "You can't just play defensively against Bayern - and in Stuttgart too. That's not the DNA of this team," said Matthäus after Dortmund's 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich and the 2-1 loss in Stuttgart.

After eleven matchdays, BVB are already ten points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen and eight points behind Bayern. The runners-up have also dropped to fifth place and are therefore no longer in a Champions League place.

"Dortmund are still in the cup and have every chance of spending the winter in the Champions League. That's why I don't expect the coach to be under pressure. But if the results and performances are not right over a longer period of time, there will automatically be discussions from outside," Matthäus said.

He also gave BVB some advice: "In my time, when things weren't going well, there were team meetings, sometimes without the coach and only between the leading players, in which they shook each other up. Talking straight, throwing everything at each other, that's what needs to happen now."

Borussia Dortmund's struggle in the Bundesliga has extended beyond the departure of Jude Bellingham, as noted by Lothar Matthäus. Despite possessing individual talent, Dortmund's current performance does not align with their team DNA, according to the record international, who criticized coach Edin Terzic's tactical choices.

Despite Borussia Dortmund's current position eight points behind Bayern Munich and ten behind Bayer Leverkusen, Matthäus believes that they still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League through cup performances.
