German football league - Matthäus applauds Bayern Munich: Kompany as coach is "an excellent option"

Lothar Matthäus has faith in Vincent Kompany taking over as the new coach of FC Bayern Munich. He believes that former Bayern coach Pep Guardiola may have recommended the Belgian. "I know I can count on him," said Matthäus during a press conference for the betting company "Interwetten" in Mönchengladbach. "Karl-Heinz Rummenigge still has a good relationship with Pep, and Kompany was his player. He could have said, 'I'm not available, but I'd do it.'"

Matthäus is hoping for the full backing of the club for the new coach, unlike with Niko Kovac, Julian Nagelsmann, and Thomas Tuchel, who didn't have this support. "I see it positively; it's a good solution if they support him," added the record national player.

Bayern had received several rejections during their lengthy search for a coach before they unexpectedly hired the ex-HSV player Kompany. The 38-year-old was previously in charge of FC Burnley in England. "He seems to have a good team and possesses a good personality," said Matthäus. "I hope he's not afraid of taking on Champions League winners and world champions."
