As an investor, Hendrik Brandis sits on many start-up boards. He takes an almost diplomatic view of the recent turmoil at OpenAI surrounding the dismissal of founder and CEO Sam Altman: "If the board kicks out the figurehead, founder and visionary of the company without consulting the 49% shareholder, I would describe that as courageous."
Words that show how difficult it sometimes is to maintain a balance in start-ups. Especially when it comes to critical decisions that can influence the fate of the company. Brandis has been an active investor with his company Earlybird for 26 years and invested in start-ups at an early stage. As an engineer, he is particularly enthusiastic about new technologies.
Brandis becomes particularly passionate when it comes to start-ups such as Marvel Fusion, which deals with nuclear fusion. "The first time I looked at a concept from Marvel Fusion, where incredible physicists are connected with a European Nobel Prize winner on board who want to turn nuclear fusion on its head, I found it incredibly fascinating," Brandis tells the ntv podcast "So techt Deutschland".
Brandis sees his professional challenge and personal fulfillment in such projects. In Germany, a trend is also emerging that goes beyond pure business model innovations and is "shifting towards truly profound technology innovations", explains Brandis. In the new episode of "So techt Deutschland", Hendrik Brandis explains why the range of new technologies on offer today is "on a different star" compared to when he started out 26 years ago.

Hendrik Brandis' passion for new technologies extends beyond investment, as he is also an engineer. Particularly intriguing for him is the field of nuclear fusion, with start-ups like Marvel Fusion aiming to revolutionize this area.
Recognizing the potential of nuclear fusion, Brandis finds Marvel Fusion's concept, which involves top physicists and a European Nobel Prize laureate, "incredibly fascinating".
