Local elections - Martin Ansbacher becomes the new Lord Mayor of Ulm
Lawyer Martin Ansbacher has won the run-off election for the office of Lord Mayor in Ulm. "It's a historic result," he said in Ulm. According to the provisional election results on Sunday evening, Ansbacher (SPD) won with 55.11 percent of the vote against the incumbent Gunter Czisch (CDU), the city announced. Czisch achieved 44.89 percent of the vote in the run-off. According to city figures, the voter turnout was 38.38 percent.
"He had not expected a result this clear," said Ansbacher when the provisional election result was announced. He has been a member of Ulm's municipal council since 2014 and has been district chairman of the Ulm SPD since 2019. "The next few years won't be a walk in the park," he said. But he is looking forward to it.
"The result speaks for itself," said Gunter Czisch on Sunday evening. He suspected that many voters who had voted for Green Party Chairwoman Lena Schwelling in the election two weeks ago had now voted for Ansbacher.
The run-off election was necessary because no candidate had achieved an absolute majority in the election on December 3. According to the Tübingen regional council, it is currently examining an objection lodged by a candidate against the election two weeks ago. The non-party candidate Daniel Langhans says he doubts that his share of the vote is actually 2.62 percent.
